Supporting Anxious Children: A Guide for Parents

Anxiety in children and adolescents is one of the most common mental health concerns we see in practice. At Insightful Minds Psychology on the Central Coast, we regularly work with young people and their families to help manage anxiety before it significantly interferes with everyday life.

While it’s normal for children to feel anxious at times—like before a test, a school performance, or meeting new people—ongoing or intense worry that disrupts sleep, appetite, learning, or friendships may indicate an anxiety disorder.

What Does Anxiety Look Like in Kids?

Anxiety can present differently in children and adolescents than in adults. It’s not always expressed as “worry.” Some children may experience:

  • Frequent stomach aches or headaches

  • Irritability or meltdowns

  • Sleep problems

  • Difficulty separating from caregivers

  • Avoidance of school or social activities

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Repetitive reassurance-seeking

These signs can be easily mistaken for behavioural issues or physical health concerns. That’s why it’s so important to seek professional support when symptoms persist.

Common Types of Anxiety in Children

As a clinical psychologist, I often assess and support children with:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder – chronic worry about everyday things

  • Social Anxiety – intense fear of judgement or embarrassment in social settings

  • Separation Anxiety – difficulty being away from parents or carers

  • Specific Phobias – fears of particular things, such as dogs, insects, or loud sounds

  • School Refusal – emotional distress related to attending school

These conditions are highly treatable with psychological support, especially when recognised early.
